Individual Therapy

~ for Kids and Adolescents ~

Children and adolescents are innately creative. Art Therapy is an effective, evidence-based therapy for young people, supporting them to find natural ways of expressing themselves. For many of us, finding the words for our inner experience is difficult. This is especially true for young people.

Giving children and adolescents the opportunity to express themselves in a non-verbal way is shown to be therapeutic, and can decrease the symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve self-esteem and self-understanding, release challenging emotions, and increase coping skills. Art Therapy can be especially helpful for young people who are neurodivergent, experiencing challenges with their emotions, or struggling with identity.

During Art Therapy, the art therapist will work toward building a safe and trusting relationship with their young client. They will work in a way that respects their boundaries, and offers them control and agency throughout the session. Art Therapy often involves play and collaboration, making it an age-appropriate therapy for children.

It is best if parents and caregivers do not attend their child’s art therapy session. The therapist will communicate and offer regular feedback to caregivers, and may also offer family or dyad sessions if deemed appropriate. We want to make sure children and adolescents feel that the art therapy space is a special and safe space just for them.
